Shooting May Have Been Case of Self Defense

One man was hospitalized following a shooting last Thursday, Dec. 19, in Southern Lee County.

Lee County Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger said his office received a 911 call about the shooting around 12:16 p.m at a residence in the 2100 block of County Road 217, which is located near the Bullpen Bar and Grill.

Shortly thereafter, 911 dispatcher received another call reporting that a male victim with a gunshot wound was being driven away from the scene.

Durrenberger said he and deputies arrived at the residence, where they placed one male subject under arrest. There was a heavy law enforcement presence in the area that afternoon. Multiple agencies responded, and they set up a command post at the Bullpen, Durrenberger said.

The man with the gunshot wound was driven by private vehicle to the Lee County Law Enforcement Center, where he was treated by Lee County EMS and transported by helicopter for further treatment.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is conducting the investigation with the assistance of the Texas Rangers. Durrenberger declined to name the suspect or the victim, citing the open investigation.

In an interview with the Record Friday morning, Durrenberger said investigators were trying to determine whether the shooting was a case of self defense. He said the case may be ultimately handed over to a grand jury to decide whether or not to pursue charges.
