La Grange Icon Passes

Legendary La Grange teacher’s aide Gladys Demerson passed away last week at the age of 96. Demerson endeared herself to generations of La Grange elementary kids with her kind, caring approach to helping students. Demerson is shown above at a 95th birthday party back in 2023 arranged by some of her former co-workers. When we posted about her birthday back then on the Fayette County Record facebook page, a record number of people (245!) responded with their own memories of Demerson and birthday wishes for her. Funeral arrangements were not available at press time.

The scholarship fundraising meal also included addresses from local Longhorn legends James Dick, left, the founder of Festival Hill, and a keynote speech from James “Doc” Ayres, the founder of Shakespeare at Winedale and the Camp Shakespeare programs.
