Senior Connections Has New Program

A special walker with a seat, and a knee scooter have been donated to Senior Connections to help create a new program called “The Shop.” These items will be the starting point for the creation of the new program at Senior Connections. This program will house these pieces of equipment for others in the community that may have use of them, but won’t have to buy them. They can check out a piece of equipment and then return it when they no longer have need of them, so that others can use them if there is a need. The price of a knee scooter can range from $100 to $300. Jennifer Moring, manager of the Fayette Savings Bank in Weimar, was instrumental in getting some of this equipment donated as opposed to an individual having to make an actual purchase of them. These types of generous actions are what makes our area a great place to live and raise our families. One person may have a need and only by asking others can this need be met.

Secure Document Shred Day Oct. 22

The City of La Grange, the La Grange Police Department and the La Grange Citizens Police Academy are pleased to announce that, in conjunction with the Spring Clean Up, the city will host a “Secure Document Shred Day” on Saturday, Oct. 22. This event is being held to assist citizens in shredding documents which might have confidential information on them. The shred event will be held at the La Grange Police Department located at 243 South College from 9 a.m. until noon on Oct. 22. Mobile, on-site paper shredding ensures that all discarded information is protected from unauthorized use, eliminating the possibility of fraud or identity theft. This is a free service to the customers of La Grange Utilities. Anyone bringing items to be shredded are asked to bring a City of La Grange utility bill with you in order to participate in this program. Items accepted are paper, magazines, credit cards, and documents with staples, binder clips, or paperclips. Items that will not be accepted are boxes, cardboard, floppy disks, hard drives, CD’s, and USB drives. If you have any questions, call City Hall at (979) 968-5805 or the La Grange Police Department at (979) 968-5806.

Texas Heroes Day Events Held Around La Grange

Texas Heroes Day events were held around La Grange Saturday, including at Monument Hill State Historic Site, shown here. During a morning ceremony there, wreaths were placed around the tomb of the men that died during the Dawson Massacre of September 1842 and the Mier expedition of November 1842, also known as the “black bean” incident. Those wreaths were placed by the Texian Reenactors group, who then fired a gun salute (above) to honor those buried at the site. Stephen Cure, Military and Oral History Programs Coordinator of the Texas Historical Commission gave the keynote speech during the event, not only detailing the history of the tomb above La Grange (which was saved from removal by locals) but also highlighting the importance of such memorials as a “tangible reminder of the courage, sacrifice and contributions” of these early Texans, and how such monuments spark conversations that increase our knowledge of history. Other events Saturday were held at The Faison Home and the Texas Heroes Museum.

Even With Recent Rains, Fires Have Continued

La Grange Volunteer Fire Department put out a small grass fire on Chaparral Rd. last Wednesday, Sept. 14. Fire Chief Frank Menefee said the property owner started a brush pile that got out of control. The grass surrounding the burn pile was green, but the fire spread due to dry litter beneath the green grass. The flames also spread to some nearby brush.
