Fayette County hopes to get a big share of the $4.3 billion in federal hazard mitigation grant funding awarded to the State of Texas. Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau told the Commissioners at a special meeting Tuesday morning that the County could apply for up to $100 million of those federal funds.

The City of La Grange will apply for $10.8 million in federal hazard mitigation funds for drainage improvements around town. The funds are part of a $4.3 billion allocation that the federal government gave to Texas in response to Hurricane Harvey.

Navidad Valley Community Connections (NVCC) continues with its careful reopening, using good handwashing, temperature checks and masks. NVCC is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Schulenburg. On Friday, Crafty Corner is open from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the craft room on Kessler Ave. On Monday and Wednesday, members start the day with dominos, usually 42 and chicken foot or other games/cards.

Texas Heroes Day 2020 is going virtual. The Texas Historical Commission, in partnership with the Friends of Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites, will host a series of internet-accessible programs and activities to commemorate the Texas History of Monument Hill. Monument Hill State Historic Sites memorializes Republic of Texas soldiers who died during the ill-fated Dawson and Mier Expeditions (1842-1843). Texas Heroes Day evolved out of earlier commemorations to honor those who defended the Republic of Texas and to pay tribute to the Texas men and women who have served in the military.

Fayette County’s coronavirus case numbers bumped up this week after an outbreak involving multiple long-term care facilities and the Fayette County Jail. According to Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau, five guards and one inmate at the jail tested positive for COVID last week, along with 35 residents and staff at four of the seven long-term care facilities in Fayette County.

Flatonia named the 2020 Homecoming Queen, Jessica Pope, and Homecoming King, Izick Hernandez, at Friday night’s football game, which the Bulldogs won 34-7. More on that game on Page B2 today.

Michael and Mazie Hess of Ellinger died Thursday, two days after they were both seriously injured after a massive explosion caused by a propane leak leveled their home. Both Michael, 79, and Mazie, 81, were pulled from the rubble by neighbors and flown by helicopter to Austin where they underwent surgeries, but their injuries ultimately proved to be fatal.

Fayette County Commissioners appointed Sylvia Mendoza to serve the unexpired term of the late Fayette County Tax Assessor-Collector Rosalinda Adamcik, who died in office unexpectedly on August 29. Mendoza has worked in the Tax Assessor’s Office for the past five years.

The City of Flatonia declined to hand over documents detailing the investigation and subsequent retirement of former City Secretary Melissa Brunner. Instead, the City is asking Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to keep most of the details private.
