As Federal Shutdown Deepens Food Insecurity, St. Nicholas Ministry Steps Up for Local Families

The St. Nicholas Ministry is now in its 38th year, serving needy children, their families, and elderly persons in Lavaca, Colorado and Fayette Counties. This ecumenical ministry involving area churches, parochial and public schools, service organizations, KJZT, Catholic Daughters, Knights of Columbus, Lutheran Men and Women of the ELCA, helping agencies, businesses and individuals was begun by Pastor Herb Beyer who has served the tri-county area for the last 40 years.

Turtle Wing Announces Giving Wings Campaign

Turtle Wing Announced $10,000 in matches for End of Year “Giving Wings” Campaign Turtle Wing, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, continues to serve hundreds of families who have children with learning challenges, connecting them with the needed services to be successful, helping them afford those services, and creating new opportunities. Last year, over 320 individuals and their families received services funded by Turtle Wing, ranging from speech therapy to after-school art class.

Due to the Government shut down, SNAP benefits will not be renewed for many people as of Nov. 1. Starting Nov. 6, AMEN Food Pantry will be open the first and third Thursday’s of the month from 4:30-6 p.m. to accommodate the working individuals who are unable to come on Mondays.

La Grange Band Competes at State

For the second consecutive year, and only the second time in school history, the La Grange High School band competed at the state marching competition Wednesday at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The band qualified for state by being one of the top 27 Class 4A bands (out of over 200) in the entire state.

Construction Begins on New Hostyn Church

Construction work has really taken off at the site of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn with piles of dirt rivaling the height of the ornate, historic grotto and stone chapels that surround the site. The previous church was destroyed in a gas explosion June 9, 2022. Westfall Constructors of Houston is in charge of the roughly $10 million project.
