La Grange FIre Chief Frank Menefee waits for a wrecker after putting out a car fire with his extinguisher Wednesday morning, Sept. 23. The fire happened around 11 a.m. near the intersection of Travis Street and SH 159. The vehicle was a sheriff’s patrol car from Cameron County. Menefee said a Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputy was transporting a prisoner when the front passenger side wheel bearing failed, causing a small fire and smoke. On Tuesday, Oct. 20, at noon, Bryan McAuley, site manager at San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, will share a quick overview of the San Felipe project, which culminated in the opening of a new visitor center in the spring of 2018. The site shares the stories of Stephen F. Austin and his efforts to recruit settlers to Mexican Texas between 1821 and 1836 and is located at the site of his Colony headquarters. Of note, the program will discuss a current outdoor exhibit project that will result in some representative buildings from one of the most significant blocks from the business district of the town.
