The City of Round Top made it through the winter storm better than many areas. Mayor Mark Massey said residents inside the city did not lose power, and those outside the city limits were seeing rolling blackouts of typically one hour on, followed by two hours off.

Crews from Fayette Electric Cooperative were finally seeing “the light at the end of the tunnel” on Friday when the sun came out and the temperatures began rising above the freezing mark. The brutal weather caused weather related power outages for members of Fayette Electric prompting FEC’s line crews, four contractor crews and employees to work around the clock until power was restored to all of the members on Friday afternoon at 2:45 p.m.

In true German Texan resiliency and fashion, when “there’s a will, there’s a way.” COVID did not stop the annual German Language Competition this year. Instead, it was adapted for virtual competition. Events that normally encourage or require groups of students to gather and practice for any length of time were dropped for the 2021 competition, such as folk dancing, polka band, skits and plays. All other events were submitted online, with a few having to be held over Zoom.

Saturday, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Texas and ordered federal assistance to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by severe winter storms beginning on February 11, 2021, and continuing.

Speaking of COVID ... According to county officials, as of Friday there were 38 confirmed active cases here, 15 probable and 2,127 recoveries ... According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, 2,684 people in Fayette County have gotten as least one dose of the COVID vaccine ... Due to inclement weather, the CDC halted all shipments of vaccines last week.
