La Grange area residents can expect to see some major highway construction projects over the next few years. La Grange City Manager Shawn Raborn presented an update to the City Council on March 8 about some upcoming plans from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The Spring/Summer exhibits at the Texas Quilt Museum are all about colors: in solids, in nature, and in glorious blue and white. They will run March 25-September 18, and are partially sponsored by Reynolds & Associates.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) is pleased to open a beautiful new display, Texas-Czech Wedding Apparel and Traditions, of wedding dresses, associated apparel, and information on early wedding traditions in the main museum.

Robert E. Haberland, a now-deceased veteran, and his daughter, Colleen (Haberland) Vendel and her husband, David Vendel, have donated a motorized wheel chair to the H. J. Ehler American Legion Post 102 of La Grange, Texas. Pictured above is David Vendel, left, and Glenn E. Altwein, Commander of Post 102. Robert and his wife Cynthia both passed away in 2020 due to Covid-19. Robert was a WW II veteran, having served as an Electrician’s Mate Third Class in the U.S. Navy from July 1, 1943 through June 29, 1946. He was Honorably Discharged after having served in Casablanca and Palermo, Italy and other bases in Europe. He received several service ribbons and medals, including the European Theatre, Good Conduct and American Theatre Ribbons and the Victory Medal. Robert and Cynthia would have been married 74 years this April. Robert enjoyed a long career in various management positions before retirement. The American Legion Post 102 has initiated a service program to loan the wheel chair to a veteran for his/her use and benefit. Last week I wrote about using vinegar for controlling weeds. Right now, I’m sure a lot of folks are thinking about putting some “weed and feed” products on their lawns. The weed killer in most of those products is 2,4-D, which is terrible for our pets and children to walk upon. There is an organic alternative that you may want to try.

Fayette Electric Cooperative is urging caution this week after one of its members was recently targeted in a phone scam. The fraudulent caller claimed to be from Fayette Electric Cooperative.

Each year during Catholic Schools Week the students of St. Rose of Lima Catholic School have the opportunity to bring in change and make donations towards selected charities in exchange for “free dress” days during the week. Recently, Principal, Rosanne Gallia, presented a check for $825 to Turtle Wing Foundation as a result of this community service project. St. Rose of Lima has a long history with Turtle Wing. It hosted the first Fundamental Learning Lab and also is the home of the Jack Hooper Prayer Garden. The St. Rose Parish was hugely supportive of the Hooper family when Jack passed and has remained a central part of their faith family. Turtle Wing has been providing Early Intervention, Supplemental Services and Community Education & Advocacy programming to children and families from Colorado, Fayette, Lavaca and surrounding counties with academic, social-emotional, behavioral and/or developmental needs since 2012. Last year over 300 children received direct services with thousands more benefiting indirectly through education and advocacy work. City of Fayetteville Sewer Bill The City of Fayetteville will average the sewer bill using the months of December and January only, providing residents a break from a higher base rate due to the freeze. February’s usage won’t be included in the averaging as it has been in the past.
