The Flatonia City Council cut ties with its City Attorney, Angela Beck, at a meeting Tuesday night after allegations that Beck tried to alter a document that the Fayette County Record requested through the Texas Public Information Act (PIA).

Bridge builders working under general contractor Angel Brothers Construction are about a third of the way through the project to expand the Travis Street bridge across the Colorado River in La Grange, according to a construction report on the Texas Department of Transportation website. The $13.6 million project involves building a new bridge that will eventually serve eastbound traffic on the bridge. But first, it will serve both directions of traffic while workers will refurbish the old truss bridge. Once complete, the old truss bridge will serve westbound traffic, allowing for separated lanes of traffic. Construction began on Nov. 9, 2020. Many Electric customers across Fayette County can expect higher utility bills due the hike in wholesale electric prices during Winter Storm Uri in February. Some customers will feel the effect for years.

American paralympic athlete Thomas Bourgeois of San Antonio will be the featured speaker at this year’s graduation ceremony for La Grange High School at Leopard Stadium May 27 at 8 p.m. Bourgeois, who was born without a bone in his right leg and had that leg amputated at a young age, did not let that stop him, and he won medals at three different Summer Paralympics (in 1992 in Barcelona, 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney) all in the P44 Pentathlon event, which consists of the long jump, the shot put, the 100 meters, the discus throw, and the 400 meters.

Fayette Public Library in La Grange will host a summer reading program this year. The library did not host the program last year due to COVID-19 precautions.

A big crowd showed up Tuesday for what was billed as a “Welcome Back Community Celebration” at St. Mark’s Medical Center. The gathering had several focuses. It was part celebration of the hospital’s recent ranking among the Top 100 Rural and Community Hospital’s in the United States by the Chartis Center for Rural Health and part celebration of the reopening of the hospital in a more public sense to volunteers and visitors as the COVID crisis lessens. In 1941 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entered World War II, John L. “Johnnie” Sulak was the busy managing editor of The Fayette County Record in La Grange. Although the 34-year-old journalist wasn’t in line to be drafted because of his age, he volunteered to serve his country.

Covid and Santa Claus aren’t words generally seen together, but a Fayette County man has been playing that role since the pandemic began. Carman Kobza, who is originally from Engle, is now the chief executive officer for a German company that manufactures medical equipment.
