For 80 years, an old country store at the crossroads in Shelby has been selling groceries, feed and supplies. But anyone who knows Shelby Store knows that merchandise tells only a small part of its story.

Carmine Night Out will be held Thursday Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. at the Carmine Volunteer Fire Department. The American Legion Post 338 will perform a flag retirement ceremony followed by brief speeches from local officials. Flags are collected year round at the Carmine Museum and Visitor Center, the Village Market, and the Carmine Post Office. Hot dogs, refreshments, and door prizes are provided by Carmine Lions, Carmine VFD, and Carmine Chamber. The event is free and open to the public.

Recently a citizen addressed the commissioners court urging the county to eliminate the feral hog and coyote bounties in a cost-saving effort. So County Judge Dan Mueller asked County Extension Agent Scott Willey Thursday to address the court with information about the bounty program.

The state of Texas really dropped the ball on unprocessed new voter registrations (some dating back a full year), and it’s put county elections officials, including Fayette County Elections Administrator Donna Macik and her staff in a bind. Here’s the statement Macik made to the commissioners court at Thursday’s meeting at the courthouse: “Over the past 24 hours, Texas county voters registrars across the state have received a flood of new voter registrations and updates to voter registration records submitted through the Texas Department of Public Safety. Some of these submissions date as far back as October 2025, but were not sent to Texas county voter registrars until this week. In Fayette County, we received approximately 425 records to process as a result of a technological errors at the state level that caused this major backlog. Texas voters should be confident that Texas county election officials are working around the clock to ensure valid voter registrations submitted in a timely manner before the deadline will be processed appropriately, despite the challenges and additional time that this backlog has created. We encourage Fayette County voters to verify their registration status by contacting Fayette Co. Elections Office at 979-968-6563 to verify that their current voter registration information is updated and on file ahead of the Oct. 5 deadline.”

recently. Curtis Bradbury, who was hired earlier this year as the city’s Recreation Director, has returned to Lutherhill Ministries (where he had previously worked for 14 years). He is returning to Lutherhill as the new Director of Guest Services for the camp’s La Grange and Galveston locations.

The Fayette County courthouse was packed with amazing young people Wednesday morning. Members of the 4-H leadership teams from clubs across the county gave updates to the county commissioners on their past and future activities.
