Your Local Volunteer Fire Department Needs You

In recent years it has become more and more difficult for Volunteer Fire Departments to recruit new volunteers. As a result, many departments are woefully understaffed. Being part of a volunteer fire department can be a deeply enriching experience. Over 75% of current volunteers say they have met their closest friends volunteering for the fire department, and that being part of the department was like being in a big family with 10 brothers and sisters.

You don’t need to fight fires to be a volunteer. Local departments are looking for volunteers, male or female, with any of the following skills:

Bookeeping and accounting, vehicle and equipment maintenance, facilities maintenance, secretarial or administrative, landscape and lawn care, fundraising, community outreach, legal fire alarm system contractors, fire sprinkler contractors, truck drivers, military, physicians and nurses, teachers, and husband and wife teams.

Call or visit your local volunteer fire department today and learn about the many benefits of being a volunteer, or contact us at volunteer@supportVFA.org and you will be put in touch with a local volunteer fire department or community emergency response team.

Is your work place volunteer firefighter friendly? Can a volunteer firefighter leave work to go on a call without penalty? Are volunteer firefighters docked vacation or sick leave when they must leave work on a call? Does your company provide discounted merchandise/ services to volunteer firefighters in your community? Does your company donate to your local volunteer fire department? Ask your manager to take steps to make your company volunteer firefighter friendly.
