Younger Voters Mostly Sat Out Primary Election Here
The majority of voters who cast ballots in the primary elections last week were over age 55, and the most of those were between 65 and 74 years old.
In comparison, about 26.4 percent of the general population in Fayette County is over 65, according to the 2020 U.S. Census.
Fayette County Republican Party Chair Deborah Frank provided the following statistics on the age of voters in the primary:
Age 18 – 24: UNDER 200 voters
Age 25 – 34: Just over 200 voters
Age 35 – 44: Just over 400 voters
Age 45 – 54: Under 600 voters
Age 55 – 64: Over 1,400 voters
Age 65 – 74: Over 1,600 voters
Age 75+: Just over 1,200 voters
“Only about 22 percent of voters were under 55,” Frank said.
Frank said she was concerned that more younger voters did not participate in the primary.
The voter turnout was about 37 percent, with 6,478 out of 17,559 registered voters in Fayette County casting a ballot in either the Republican or Democratic primary.
