ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE:

“He that commends me to mine own content Commends me to the thing I cannot get.

I to the world am like a drop of water That in the ocean seeks another drop, Who, falling there to find his fellow forth, Unseen, inquisitive, confounds himself.

So I, to find a mother and a brother, In quest of them, unhappy, lose myself.”

Thus begins the whirlwind journey of mistaken identity and comic confusion in William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors”—a tale teeming with doubled lives, joyful reunions, and the poetic chaos of being “a drop of water that in the ocean seeks another drop.” Set in a world of linguistic playfulness and infectious energy, “The Comedy of Errors” explores the balance of uproarious misunderstandings and poignant moments of recognition and belonging.

The new group of Camp Shakespeareans will begin tackling the play upon their arrival in Fayette County on Sunday, June 8th. This is the 25th summer for Camp Shakespeare, a program dedicated to exploring Shakespeare through performance begun by University of Texas professor Jim (Doc) Ayres in 1964 and that found its way to Winedale in 1970. Ayres now enjoys the role of “Director of Mission,” working with students on the language, having passed the directorship to Robin Grace Soto.

“With joy (and a bit of mischief), we’ll begin our exploration of the ‘The Comedy of Errors.’ A story brimming with puns, confusion, and the ageold hope that, somehow, we will find our way back to those we love.” Soto said. “The play really is a lot of fun and filled with moments of wonder. We are honored to watch these young Shakespeareans bring it to life.” Reservations for the performances are recommended but not required.
