Final Neighbors’ Night Out Celebrates Summer Travel
The last Neighbor’s Night Out for the summer was held onAug. 19 with 21 individuals present. Conversations were regarding trips that have been taken or coming up. Winchester individuals have travelled to the following places over the summer: Japan, Germany, Colorado, Las Vegas. Arkansas, driving up the west coast and the east coast, Niagara Falls, Erie Canal, Maine, Florida, Nashville, Memphis and Wyoming. Additional trips are being planned for Colorado and Ireland. It seemed like a lot of people were trying to avoid the Texas heat, but few found relief.
Fair Plant Exhibit
Winchester gardeners and nature lovers are invited to enter their prize plants in this year’s Labor Day weekend fair. The exhibit will be in the Creative Arts Building. In keeping with the “Celebrate America 250” theme, decorate pots in red, white, and blue. Plants will be judged, with prizes awarded in youth and adult divisions. Women’s Luncheon
Murphy’s Steakhouse will host the next Women’s Luncheon at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept 10. If you plan to attend, please contact Bobbie Hajek at (979) 639-1646 so she can reserve a table.
Domino Tournament
A 42 and Straight Domino Tournament will be held Sunday, Sept. 13 at the St. Michael’s Park in downtown Winchester. Lunch will be served from 12-1 p.m. and will consist of pulled pork sandwiches, chips, cookies and tea – all for $12. The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. and will be $10 per person or $20 per team. This will be a BYOB event.
Round Table Book Club
The Winchester Round Table Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 15 to discuss the book Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett. The club will meet at 7 p.m. at Zilss Hall. All are welcome.
Guntown BBQ Showdown
The 14th Annual Guntown BBQ Showdown will be in Winchester on Oct. 9-10. Watch for more information in upcoming columns.
VFD Recruiting Volunteers
Winchester Fire Department needs you. The fire department has only 14 first responders currently. They are in desperate need for young men or women who would like to be trained to be first responders and help their community. Contact a fire department member for more information.
Recycling Trailer
All cardboard boxes need to be broken down before placing them in the recycling trailer. We would appreciate it if you made sure that you close the bins so that any trash will remain in the bins and not blow out. The Winchester recycling trailer is located on the side of Zilss Hall on Memorial Hall Street. Please place your recycling in the appropriate bins. These bins are not for household garbage.
Zilss Community Hall
Anyone wishing to rent Zilss Hall should contact (512) 434-0292. The hall is inexpensive and air conditioned and available for rentals.
Winchester Quilt Block Trail
Drive out to Winchester, pick up a map at Murphy’s or Zilss Hall, and enjoy viewing the 65 quilt blocks displayed in our area on the Quilt Block Trail. The trail is self-driven, available at your convenience, and is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon viewing quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road. Winchester Barn Board Quilt Trail maps may be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, Zilss Hall, Murphy’s Steakhouse, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange.
The Little Free Library
The library is on the covered patio at the Hall and is always open and has a variety of authors. Space is limited, so please, if you donate a book(s) look through the current selection and take as many as you leave. Also on the patio, there is a bulletin board available to post event notices.
