Wrong Time, Wrong Place for a Deer Hunt
Oct. 8, 1974
Four Houston men found out the hard way that Saturday night was the wrong time and a pasture full of registered cattle on the Cullen Ranch between Columbus and Ellinger was the wrong place to hunt deer. After Game Warden Leo Kohleffel caught up with the four between Frelsburg and Industry, the hunters appeared before Justice of the Peace Richard C. Schmidt and were each fined $212 for trespassing.
DPS troopers took three men into custody after a 10mile high speed auto pursuit on Hwy. 71 east of La Grange early Saturday morning. The arrests were made near the Ellinger Post Office on FM 2502. Two of the suspects were stationed at Fort Hood and the third was from New Ulm. The driver was charged with driving while under the influence of drugs, possession of marijuana, speeding, fleeing a police officer and driving on the wrong side of the road. The passengers were charged with drunkenness and possession of marijuana.
Burglars entered two Ellinger service stations on Hwy. 71 some time Saturday night. At the Orsak Shell Station and Cafe, between $20 and $25 in change was taken. While the La Grange Leopards and Luling’s Eagles huffed and puffed through 48 minutes of grueling football at Luling on Friday night, the best they could show for their considerable efforts was a 1414 tie. The end itself was a heart-stopper. The Leopards were at their hosts’ 10-yard line and eight seconds were left in the game when the Eagles’ Bruce Whitley intercepted Neal Miller’s pass in the end zone, thus preserving a tie for Luling.
Depositions about the involvement of Austin and the Lower Colorado River Authority in the joint coal-fired electric power plant project near La Grange were taken by the attorney for the landowners opposed to the project. The property owners contended the plant could be built more economically on the federallyowned Camp Swift property in Bastrop County because the site could be obtained from the U.S. Army at no cost. The power plant was scheduled to be in operation by 1978.
The Bishop Forest Rangers punched across a touchdown with 40 seconds left in the first half and made it stand for a 6-0 victory over the Hallettsville Sacred Heart Indians in the TCIL District 2AA opener for both teams at Schulenburg. Halfback Phil Hadash got the six points on a 4-yard dive to terminate a 50yard march.
