Disaster Training in Schulenburg
United Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 2038 FM 3171, Schulenburg, will host a Disaster Response Preparedness Training Saturday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. A light lunch will be provided. For everyone this is very practical basic training. Topics covered will be: What is the definition of a disaster? Family Preparedness: is your home ready? Congregational Preparedness: how prepared is your building and your members? There will be plenty of time for Q&A. KC BBQ Sunday In La Grange
The La Grange Knights of Columbus Chromcik Council No. 2574 will host their KC BBQ Sunday, Aug. 30. BBQ chicken and sausage to-go (drive-thru) will be available from 10:30 a.m - noon at the KC Community Center located at 190 Brown St. in La Grange. A slab of pork ribs is $20, chicken is $12 and sausage is $7. Orders are guaranteed on call-ins by calling (979) 968-5117.
OCIA, The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults sessions will begin soon. Thinking of joining the Catholic Church? Or maybe you are a Catholic, and you need to complete your Sacraments, or you want to learn more about your Faith. Join at the first OCIA meeting on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 3 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church La Grange in the Narthex of the church. Free Rides to Senior Connections
Seniors 60 and older can now ride the CARTS bus free anywhere in Fayette County and not just to Senior Connections. La Grange Senior Connections has just opened. Weekly stops include: Schulenburg Main Center, Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m - 2 p.m.; Flatonia Methodist Church, second and fourth Tuesday, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.; and La Grange Randolph Recreation Center, every Wednesday, 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. CARTS Country Bus also runs Fayette County-wide Monday- Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. and local Schulenburg service from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Call ahead to book at 512-478-RIDE (7433).
Hermann Sons Rutersville Meeting
Hermann Sons Rutersville will hold their September membership meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 2 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Rutersville Lodge. The main meal provided by the lodge will be pork ribs. Bring your favorite side dish or dessert to share.
Guest Speaker and Book Signing
Bobby J. Smith, II, associate professor of African American Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, will present a program and book signing at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening, Sept. 4, in the Fayette Public Library’s meeting room. His newly released book, Black Farm Boys: The Untold Story of the New Farmers of America, published by the University of North Carolina Press, profiles this pivotal but largely forgotten organization for African American boys studying vocational agriculture at segregated public high schools across the South. Chapter 4 bears the title, “Black Agriculture Teachers Matter: The Randolph NFA Chapter in Texas,” and contains numerous photographs taken in La Grange.
Sealy Dance
The Sealy Dance will be held on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Sealy American Legion Hall located at 1630 Meyer St. in Sealy. Al Sulak and The Country Sound Band will be providing live music from 7:30-10:30 p.m. The public is always welcome.
Second Chance Donation Hours Beginning Sept. 14, Second Chance Emporium will accept donations Tuesday-Saturday from 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. each day. The donation drop-off area will be closed on Sunday and Monday.
