Writing Competition For Students Highlights Texas Women of The Past

This coming March, the League of Women Voters of South Central Texas will celebrate Women’s History Month by inviting high school students in our five-county area to write poems and essays about historic Texas women of note. Three of the students who participate will be chosen to read their pieces at our celebration on March 9, 2025. Each of those three students will receive a $500 scholarship.

The guidelines for the 2025 event ask students to go beyond the generations still with us and learn about women from Texas’ past. These women may have been public figures, or they may have been women whose work and vision supported their families and communities in important ways. Students are invited to research and learn about a woman they think deserves to be recognized and remembered. They can do this by researching online, at local libraries, or seeking oral histories from elders in their families or faith communities. The goal is to find a woman who inspires them to share her story.

The women they write about can come from any place and time in Texas history, but they cannot live today. Extra credit will be given if they write about a woman from the League of Women Voters of South Central Texas’ five-county area, which includes Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Gonzales, and Lavaca counties.

Many have told the League how important it is to share and celebrate the inspiring stories of local women and their contributions to our communities. These stories too often untold remind women of today and future generations that their voices and stories are central to our collective history. The League believes it is vital to remember the generations of women on whose shoulders we stand.

Attendance at the League’s 2025 Women Making History celebration on March 9, at La Grange’s Historic Casino Hall is open to all.
