A woman from Austin died in a single-vehicle crash on SH 71 Monday.

The accident happened around 3:18 p.m. on April 18 just east of La Grange near The BusyB gift shop. According to a report from Trooper Mason Hartnett with the Texas Highway Patrol, 35-year-old Megan Reed of Austin was driving west in a blue 2022 Hyundai Kona.

The car left the roadway and entered the center median. It traveled about a quarter mile in the median before striking an embankment at a turnaround. The car went airborne, flew over the turnaround, and landed on the passenger side.

Hartnett said Reed was not wearing a seat belt. She died at the scene. Hartnett said he did not know why the car traveled so far in the median without stopping. He said the body would be sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy to determine any factors that may have contributed to the crash.

Fayette County EMS and La Grange Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash as well. The wreck slowed traffic on SH 71 for several hours Monday afternoon.
