Winchester Women’s Luncheon to Meet Thursday

Oktoberfest
Faith Lutheran High School’s Oktoberfest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Holy Cross Warda Picnic Grounds. There will be a German plated meal serving from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. A meal of schnitzel, potatoes, kraut, green beans, noodles, bread, and coffee cake will be available at $15 a plate. Pre-order at (979) 2422889 by Oct. 14. There will be a special live performance of a polka band with Kelsey Lien starting at noon. Winchester BBQ Cook Off The Winchester BBQ Showdown will be held Oct. 10-11, starting at 5 p.m. begin in Winchester at Shorty’s and Zilss Community Hall. The 13th annual cook off benefits Combined Community Action, Inc., (Meals on Wheels.) Best contests will include Bloody Mary’s, jackpot beans, chicken, pork chops (open to kids ages 6-14 years of age only,) pork and brisket. Scarecrow Fun Run
The Winchester Area Civic Association will hold the Second Annual Scarecrow Fun Run on Saturday, Oct.18. More information will follow in future columns.
Show Fund Dinner
Winchester Show Fund dinner will be Oct. 19 at St. Michael’s Lutheran Park.
The event will feature barbecue pork, tortillas, beans and cole slaw. It will be a drive thru dinner only from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Contact a 4-H member for more information.
International Quilt Festival Our team of quilt block paint class instructors will be offering classes again at the Houston International Quilt Festival. They have expanded from two classes to three due to the demand for the class. Karen Kilian will be joined by her assistant teachers to conduct the classes. More information in future columns.
Recycling Trailer
All cardboard boxes need to be broken down before placing them in the recycling trailer. Close the bins so that any trash will remain in the bins and not blow out. The Winchester recycling trailer is located on the side of Zilss Hall on Memorial Hall Street. Place your recycling in the appropriate bins.
Winchester Quilt Block Trail Drive out to Winchester, pick up a map at Murphy’s or Zilss Hall, and enjoy viewing the 65 quilt blocks displayed in our area on the Quilt Block Trail. The trail is self-driven, available at your convenience, and is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon viewing quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road. Winchester Barn Board Quilt Trail maps may be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, Zilss Hall, Murphy’s Steakhouse, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange.

The Little Free Library
The library is on the covered patio at the Hall and is always open and has a variety of authors. Space is limited, so please, if you donate a book(s) look through the current selection and take as many as you leave.
Round Table Book Club
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16 at Zilss Hall with the book selection is “One Good Thing” by Georgia Hunter. All are welcome.
