Weimar Man Arrested for Robbery

• A Weimar man was arrested by the Weimar Police Department, Jan. 6, for aggravated robbery. Corey L. Bishop, 44, of Weimar was arrested after robbing and assaulting Weimar residents and business owner, Carla Romine, in her shop Gathered Goods. Romine was transported by Colorado County EMS to Columbus County Hospital after sustaining serious injuries from the attack. According to the report, Bishop entered Gathered Goods around 10:25 a.m., then physically assaulted Romine, who was working inside, took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, and left the business. The police were notified and located Bishop and took him into custody. While in custody, Bishop was also served with a warrant for criminal trespassing along with an aggravated robbery charge. The total bond was set at $202,500. Romine underwent a minimally invasive surgery on her L1 and L2 spinal vertebrae and is expected to make a full recovery.
• The Texas Parks and Wildlife release 500 rainbow trout into Borden Lake on Jan. 6. The trout came from A.E. Wood Fish Hatchery in San Marcos. There is no minimum length limit on the trout, and the daily bag amount is five. A valid Texas fishing license is required to fish at Borden Lake.

• The community around CR 104 between Giddings and Lincoln was awakened in the early morning hours Jan. 11, by an explosion at the Crescent Energy Assault 1 H Well. At 5:31 a.m., Giddings Fire Department was dispatched out to CR 104 for the explosion and fire at the oil well. Upon arriving at the scene, GVFD requested Lincoln VFD to be dispatched to assist with the potentially dangerous situation. It is believed that the heater treater caught fire, causing the explosion. The heater treater is a system that uses heat to help separate water from oil, making it easier to keep production moving. Giddings VFD had an engine on scene and a tender truck, while Lincoln responded with a tender truck for extra water, if needed. Both departments had 12 firefighters on scene to contain the blaze. They fought the fire for about 30 minutes before getting it under control.
• A fourth employee of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) has succumbed to complications from COVID-19, according to Camile Cain, Executive Director of the TJJD. In a letter issued Jan. 10, Cain expressed the department’s mourning over the loss of Marcus Smith, “a beloved coach at the McLennan County State Juvenile Correction Facility in Mart.” The first employee to die with complications from the virus was Giddings State School’s Youth Development Coach Paul Wilson, who passed inn June of 2020. In August of last year, Joshua Serwanga, a teacher at the McLennan facility died, followed by Daniel Fauver, with the Office of the Independent Ombudsman. Fauver passed away in September 2021. On Jan. 10 an update was sent indicating that the system had 129 active COVID-19 cases (96 staff and 33 youth). The update included confirmation of one youth and four employees being at the Giddings State School.

• Three of four Caldwell High School volleyball players indicted by a Milam County Grand Jury on felony unlawful restraint charges in connection with a Sept. 21 incident on a school bus have pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanor charge. Katherine Hart, Marina Brinkman and Kadie Hartman pleaded guilty to misdemeanor unlawful restraint on Jan. 11, according to the Milam County District Attorney’s Office. The pleas were entered as part of a plea agreement. They will receive one year of deferred adjudicated probation and be fined $4,000 each and restitution in an amount to be determined after the plea, according to the DA’s office. They must also have no contact with the victim and complete 40 hours of community service.
