Weimar Library to Host Native Grass Seeding Presentation

The Friends of the Weimar Public Library and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office of Colorado County will present “Native Grasses and Plants” at the Weimar Public Library from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 21.

The upcoming presentation will identify and discuss Texas native grasses and plants and the benefits of seeding acreage with grasses that improve soil composition, provide easy maintenance, and create a habitat for insects that contribute to the ecosystem.

In addition, Texas AgriLife Extension Agent Laramie Kettler will cover the seeding process from start to finish. Kettler says the program, “is geared toward landowners interested in converting pastures to native grasses, or who want to learn more about establishing native grasses on their property.”

Today, just one percent of Texas’ original native grasslands remain intact. This puts enormous pressure on our natural resources.

Concerned citizens are turning to native grasses and plants to provide ways to reduce supplemental watering, to provide soil stabilization and erosion control, and to provide nectar, pollen, and seeds that serve as food for native butterflies, insects, birds and other animals.
