Vehicle Pursuit Goes All Across County

Vehicle Pursuit Goes All Across County

A high speed vehicle pursuit ended in La Grange Monday morning, May 23.

The chase began when Investigator David Smith with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office spotted a vehicle that ran off the road into the median on Interstate 10 near Flatonia.

A report from the Sheriff’s Office said Smith activated his lights and was about to stop and investigate when the vehicle sped away.

The chase went east on Interstate 10 towards Schulenburg. The fleeing vehicle exited the Interstate in Schulenburg and headed north on US 77. By that time other officers joined in the pursuit. The vehicle led officers toward La Grange before turning toward Hostyn. The chase went down several backroads west of La Grange. The fleeing vehicle got on SH 71 near Plum and headed back towards La Grange. The vehicle exited SH 71 at US 77 and turned south into La Grange.

The vehicle sped through town on US 77 with deputies in hot pursuit. Dozens of folks watched the chase from the sidewalks of business along Jefferson Street. The car turned west and led officers through the neighborhood in the southwest corner of town. The driver sealed his fate when he turned onto Lowerline Street, which dead-ends near the Country Way Village neighborhood.

Officers conducted a felony traffic stop and took the driver and a passenger into custody. Both were 18-year-old men from Spring. The Sheriff’s Office has not released their names or the charges. The pursuit lasted about 32 minutes. Officers located narcotics and other contraband in the vehicle, according to the Sheriff’s report.

The La Grange Police Department assisted the Sheriff’s Office with the chase.
