Truck Goes Flying After Being Struck by Train Near Winchester
A train struck a pickup on a private railroad crossing north of Winchester Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 18. No one was seriously injured.
First responders got the call around 3:16 p.m. The crash happened at a private crossing off FM 448 just a few hundred feet from the Lee County Line. A Chevy pickup belonging to a plumbing company from Bastrop attempted to cross the tracks. It failed to stop as the train was approaching.
The cab of the pickup made it across the tracks. The train struck the bed of the truck. The impact sent the pickup flying into the ditch on the west side of the tracks. It came to rest facing east.
First responders from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County EMS, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety arrived at the scene. EMS even called for medical helicopters in anticipation of serious injuries, but they were called off after first responders assessed the scene.
Two men were inside the pickup. One of them complained of soreness from the seat belt. Both occupants declined medical treatment.
Several crossings along FM 448 remained closed until around 7 p.m. as railroad officials inspected the track for damages.
