A Mercedes SUV pulling a horse trailer caught fire Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Bar G Convenience Store in La Grange.

The incident happened around 8:40 a.m. The driver, Ryan Allgyer, said she was traveling from Austin to Bellville when she pulled off the highway.

“I stopped to get gas, and my car stopped moving,” Allgyer said. “I got out and the hood was on fire.”

A witness who was across the street at Texas One Stop said he saw the flames and ran over with a fire extinguisher. The attendant at Bar G also ran out of the store with a fire extinguisher. The witnesses said it took six small fire extinguishers to knock down the flames. La Grange Volunteer Fire Department arrived and put out the smoking remnants.

No one was injured. Allgyer got her horse safely out of the trailer.

Allgyer said she was on her way to an equestrian show. A relative was coming to pick her up and tow the trailer, Allgyer said. A resident with property near Bar G offered to board her horse until help arrived.

La Grange Police Department assisted at the scene. Fayette County Animal Control Officer Dean Ahlschlager responded as well.
