Tejas Healthcare in La Grange hosted its annual Back 2 School Festival on Saturday, Aug. 3.

“This is our 5th year, and we do it in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce,” said Gene Carson, Tejas’ chief financial officer. “We get local businesses and civic organizations to donate money. This year, we’re giving out 600 backpacks for kids in Pre K through sixth grade, and then 100 to give out to older kids.”

Organizers used donations to buy school supplies based on the La Grange I.S.D. school supply list.

Carson said the backpacks for the Pre K through sixth graders come with 80 to 90 percent of the school supplies they need.

Local churches including Crosspoint Church, The Remnant Church, and St. Paul Lutheran, along with civic organizations such as the Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Optimist Club helped purchase the supplies.

“We had a ton of donations from local businesses as well,” Carson said.

Feed the Need ministries served hot dogs donated by HE- B. The Lions Club provided free eye exams for students during the event. There was a bounce house on the grounds as well for children to enjoy.

“Anybody was welcome,” Carson said. “You don’t have have to be from La Grange, but list is based on La Grange school supplies. It has been a big community event. We stuffed the backpacks on Tuesday and about 50 people from the community showed up to help.

“We facilitate it, but without the whole community, we couldn’t do it,” Carson added.
