Tales in Clay and Color: Las Cuentistas Opens at Ross Gallery
Arts for Rural Texas (ARTS) presents Las Cuentistas: The Storytellers, a new gallery exhibition by Michelle Cuevas and Pamela Enriquez-Courts. An exhibition opening will be held Saturday, June 14 from 4–6 p.m. at the Ross Gallery in Fayetteville. Featuring a blend of ceramics and paintings, this collection of work celebrates cultural heritage and the art of storytelling. Michelle creates decorative shrines, narrative story boxes, and hand-built functional wares like mugs, plates, and teacups. Each piece begins as a simple slab of clay, shaped and formed by hand. Once constructed, the pieces are glazed in bold, brilliant colors and patterns. Michelle hand-paints every piece with intricate designs inspired by traditional Mexican textiles and elements of pop culture.
“I love using humor and pop culture references to bring some light and giggles to serious topics,” she says. “My bright colors and patterns help tell that story—because what’s life if you can’t laugh through the tough parts, at least a little bit?”
Pamela’s illustrations bring to life the narrative of her original children’s book, which follows the journey of Itza Temachtiani, a wise teacher, and her furry pupil HueHue, a Xoloitzcuintli puppy. In ancient Mesoamerican belief, these sacred dogs were thought to possess the ability to travel to the afterlife, guiding souls through the perilous path of the underworld to reach Mictlan. Through years of dedication and training under Itza’s care, HueHue prepares to fulfill his destiny—earning his wings to become the courageous spirit guide he was meant to be. Join ARTS for the opening reception to meet the artists and learn more about their work. The exhibition will remain on view through July 26. Ceramics by Michelle Cuevas.
