Spring Break on the Bluff Returns

Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites are excited to welcome the new Spring season with the third annual Spring Break on the Bluff, a familyfriendly series of programs showcasing the sites’ unique history. From Saturday, March 8 through Sunday, March 16, this event offers nine days of activities inspired by 19thcentury crafts, food practices, and pastimes. Each program is from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and is included with sites admission.

This year’s line-up of activities includes Victorian costume dress-up, building and decorating a wooden toolbox, and handwriting and waxsealing a letter, which site educators will mail to your intended recipient. “These programs will help students and families add some 19th-century skills to their repertoire and truly get a glimpse of an average day on the Bluff in the 1880s,” says Lead Educator Jenny Townzen. Popular returning programs will include sauerkraut making, a smokehouse demonstration, churning homemade ice cream, and playing historic games – all set against the backdrop of the late 1800s Kreische House.

New this year is the Spring Break on the Bluff stamp card. Participants will earn a stamp for each event they attend, with four stamps earning a prize and six or more earning a special prize bag. Stamp cards are available at the Visitors Center and participating locations around La Grange.

Along with these staff-led programs, families can explore the sites’ central themes at the outdoor playscape, which opened last November. This self-guided interactive experience includes excavating and analyzing an artifact at the mock dig pit, carrying items across the concrete “Colorado River” on Kreische’s ferry, and practicing stonemasonry skills with wooden building blocks at the Stone Haus.

Spring Break programs are included with regular sites admission. Friends members and children 5 and under are free, with admission $2 for students, $3 for seniors, and $5 for adults.
