Spike Strips Halt Vehicle Pursuit Here
pursuit on Saturday.
Schulenburg Police Chief Troy Brenek reports that a trooper with the Texas Highway Patrol began the pursuit in Gonzales County. A gray Dodge Challenger would not stop for the trooper. It came into Fayette County on Interstate 10 from the west.
Brenek said his department was notified about the pursuit around 7:55 p.m. Schulenburg Police Officer Byron Powe drove to the emergency turnaround at mile marker 670, located about halfway between Schulenburg and Engle. Powe waited for the Dodge to approach. When he noticed a clearing in the traffic, Brenek said, Powe deployed a set of tire deflation spikes in the roadway.
The Challenger ran over the spikes and came to a stop after a short distance. Powe detained the driver while the troopers from Gonzales County arrived at the scene. The driver’s 8-year-old child was in the back seat.
Brenek said the troopers arrested the driver. The Record was unable to reach Gonzales County Highway Patrol for information about the driver’s identity or the charges he faced.
