Around thirty Speed family members gathered to catch up and look at some family history on the second Saturday in June. This was the 77th Annual Speed Family gathering and was held at the Muldoon Mercantile building.

The extensive family tree was laid out by Julia Speed and Andrea Russell for everyone to check out, add new members and also, sadly, to add some passings. The tree goes all the way back to the English roots of the Speed family.

Everyone got to enjoy some delicious food that included the now “famous” corn on the cob brought by Kris Syler. There were some delicious barbecue and ribs among the selections to be had for lunch.

Following lunch, the business meeting was held. Honors this year for the oldest family member in attendance was given to Ira Syler and the youngest honor was Ira James Ivy. The farthest traveled was from Florida to attend the gathering. Some even drove in from Winnsboro and were driving back that day to spend time with family.

If any Speed family members missed out this year, be sure and mark your calendars for next year’s gathering – same location on the second Saturday in June.

4th July In The Park

Time is getting closer for the big July 4th celebration in the Muldoon Community Park. There are big plans for this year’s comeback party. With America celebrating 250 years and the park association has new officers who are really investing in the park itself, it is sure to be a really great community time.

The big parade will be starting at 10 a.m. this year. Everyone is invited to be planning a float, or some type of entry for the parade. This year the route will not be going over the tracks.

Following the parade everyone is to gather in the park for more fun. Bring your lawn chairs to relax and have some fun visiting and catching up. There will be a fun hat contest. Decorate your favorite hat in a very patriotic style and wear it with pride. There is a good chance you will win not only bragging rights, but maybe a prize too. Meanwhile you can try your hand at cake and plant walks. What a fun time this will be.

Also going on in the park there will be for the first time a live band. This will be an exciting addition to the gathering. While listening to some fantastic music everyone can participate in the silent auction. Donations are being taken for the silent auction. If you have something nice to donate, please contact Antoniette Syler-Joplin at (979) 561-6973 for more information on what is needed, and that includes volunteers. The funds raised at the auction will be used for the park’s upkeep and improvement. With the new board working hard, the park will be a place of pride in the Muldoon community.

It would not be the 4th of July without the All-American hot dog meal. Everyone is asked to bring along side dishes and desserts to go with the hot dogs to share in a community picnic. It is always fun to see and sample what everyone brings. There will be a freewill donation to defray the cost of supplies the park association is providing.

Museum Open

The Muldoon Museum will be open on July 4th prior to the big parade. They open the doors at 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10 a.m. as the parade begins. This is a good chance to see all the newest additions and admire some of the older exhibits.

Church News

The Stray Gathering Cowboy Church is alive and very active in the Muldoon community they have a ladies’ Bible Study that is ongoing on Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m.
