Senior Connections Hosts Weekly Activities
Senior Connections is happy to provide a muchneeded service for seniors from Fayette and Lavaca Counties. Anyone 55 and up can join at any or all locations, and the membership is free.
On Monday, Aug. 17, we are in Schulenburg at 1111 Bohlmann Avenue in Wolters Park. The schedule has a small change for our early risers. Starting today, we begin enforcing our opening time at 9 a.m. Staff and volunteers really need the time to prepare for the day. We love that members are so excited to get together with their friends and play games, and we appreciate their respect for our official opening time from now on. Today is Cookie Round Up Day, so we hope that people will bake cookies over the weekend so we can bag them up and share them with our bingo callers and program presenters.
Mornings are filled with games, hot coffee, and good friends. At 11:15 a.m. we prepare for our lunch service with announcements and prayer concerns, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the blessing of the meal. At 11:30 a.m., we line up for a very popular meal provided by Koopmann Catering, which stars chicken strips and cream gravy. Volunteers will prepare buttered noodles and salad, and our lovely members always bring desserts. You don’t have to bake to bring a treat to share. You can always go to the bakery or the local grocery store to pick up something to share. Sign your name up for a date to share a dessert with a friend. This is true throughout all of our locations.
After this delicious meal, Pam Latham, who works at Hometown Wellness, will join for our educational program on dementia prevention. You will find this presentation entertaining and informative because it’s about taking care of ourselves and making good decisions. At 12:30, Amanda with Any Time Fitness calls the bingo game.
On Tuesday, Aug. 18, we are in Weimar at First United Methodist Church, 301 W. Saint Charles St. After a morning of competitive domino games, members will enjoy chili with Fritos and cornbread and all the toppings. Following the meal, the La Grange Roadrunner Square Dance Club will join for a demonstration of a foursquare. Maybe you’ll be inspired to join their dance classes every Tuesday at the Randolph Rec Center in La Grange. At 12:30 p.m., LaBrittany with True Care Living Centers of Columbus will be there to bring on the bingo game.
We are back in Schulenburg on Wednesday, Aug. 19. We will celebrate birthdays, so if you were born in August and would like to get your picture taken, we encourage you to be there for the photo with a delicious birthday cake baked by an amazing anonymous woman at 10:45 a.m. The cake is then sent to the kitchen to be cut and served. We will certainly pack the house in Schulenburg with Oakridge Smokehouse barbecue brisket and sausage on the menu, served with potato salad, bread, and desserts by our members. We have a VIP bingo caller, Drew Brossmann, Precinct 4 County Commissioner.
Also on Wednesday, Aug. 19, join us in La Grange at 653 E. Pearl St., Building A. Join for our third week in our latest satellite location. We’re happy to see interest growing, and we know this location will be a big success. One of the big attractions for members is the food prepared by Executive Director, Amanda Kridel. Today, members will get a treat of her homemade meatloaf, served with buttered potatoes, salad, and desserts from the members. The presentation following the meal will be the La Grange Roadrunner Square Dance Club. At 12:30, Tammy Horton with R1 RCM Management Services Co. will be in the house to call the bingo game.
Artful Friday continues on Friday, Aug. 21 at 1206 Lyons Ave. in Schulenburg.
