Slab Poured For New German-Czech Mart at Fairgrounds

Workers with Supak’s Inc. poured a concrete slab for the new German-Czech Mart at the Fayette County Fairgrounds on Thursday, Feb. 13.

“It was a long, cold day for them, but they did a great job,” said Fayette County Fair Association President Michael Zuhn.

The crew got started early. “We started pouring concrete about 10 minutes to five,” said Brandon Wischnewsky, manager of Supak’s Inc. “We poured out 225 yards. The guys didn’t get off of that slab, because of the overcast and the temperature, until after midnight.”

Wischnewsky said framing will begin in about three or four weeks.

“If it was the summer time, the concrete would cure a lot faster,” Wischnewsky said. “Because of the temperature, we’d probably be on that slab in a couple of weeks. But given how overcast and cool it is outside, we’re probably going to wait three or four weeks. It’ll actually turn out to be a better slab because it cures a lot slower.”

Zuhn said the building should be ready in time for this year’s Fair, which takes place on Labor Day weekend, Aug. 28-31.

“The steel erection should go really fast,” Zuhn said. “Those things go up in a matter of days. We’ve got people lined up already for the construction of the vendors spaces – electricians, plumbers – everybody is lined up to get up there and do the job whenever we’re ready for them. It seems like everything is falling into line.”
