Sheriff Korenek Reports on March Activities

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports activities of Fayette County Sheriff Deputies for the month of March.

Sgt. Ben Wilson assisted with a vehicle pursuit on Hwy. 71 westbound. The pursuit came to an end near loop 220 when the suspect’s vehicle was crashed due to his own reckless driving while evading from law enforcement officers. The suspect was transferred to a nearby hospital and is facing charges for evading.

Investigator Marc Bennett is currently working 18 CPS allegations of physical abuse and has obtained three felony warrants.

Sgt. Ron Naumann seized a 2020 Dodge Charger after the subjects defaulted on the loan. Naumann carried out a Writ of Execution and the vehicle was surrendered to the Sheriff’s Office and was later released to the lienholder.

Sgt. Ryan Meagher conducted a traffic stop on FM 2436 near FM 609 for a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle was found to be in possession of ecstasy pills and was arrested. Meagher also stopped a vehicle on IH-10 Eastbound at mile marker 668 for multiple violations. The passenger of the vehicle was found to be wanted out of California for robbery with full extradition. The passenger was arrested without incident.

Sgt. Charles Jobb responded to a fence damage incident where equipment at a construction site at US 77 and FM 2145 was stuck and slid off into a barbwire fence. An agreement was exchanged between both parties and no charges were filed.

Deputy Terry Guentert responded to a fatal accident involving an ATV in the Muldoon area. Deputy Herman Olvera was dispatched to a residence in the Flatonia area in reference to fraud.

Deputy Austin Moore conducted a traffic stop on US 77 near La Grange. After further investigation, three subjects in the vehicle were found to be in possession of methamphetamine. One of the subjects provided a false name to Moore and faced additional charges for failure to identify. The subject was later found to be wanted out of Brazos County on two felony warrants.

Moore also stopped a vehicle on FM 609 in Flatonia. The driver was found to be in possession of cocaine and was arrested.

Deputy James Ulbig responded to a vehicle fire on I-10 Eastbound mile marker 660. The vehicle was unoccupied and completely engulfed. The cause of the fire in unknown and an owner of the vehicle has not yet been located. Ulbig also took a report of a burglary which occurred at the Affordable Storage Units on FM 155. Information was gathered and a report was completed. Case is under investigation at this time.

Deputy Duane Meagher took a report of a lost money bag at the Antique Fair in Warrenton. The money bag was located and turned into the Round Top State Bank by a Good Samaritan. Deputy Meagher took possession of the bag and returned it to the owner. Deputy Meagher also stopped a vehicle on SH 71 eastbound near US 77. After further investigation, it was determined the passenger of the vehicle threw marijuana out of the vehicle. The passenger was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and tampering with physical evidence with intent to impair.

Investigator Kenn Kretz issued a citation to an individual near Ellinger following the investigation of an illegal dumping incident.

Deputy Joe Gonzales assisted Deputy Phillips with serving a felony warrant in the Ellinger area. The subject was found hiding behind a bush and evaded deputies on foot. After a short foot pursuit, the subject was taken into custody. Gonzales also responded to a residence near La Grange in reference to a death inquest. The death was ruled to be of natural causes due to terminal illness.

Deputy Michael Krenek responded to a residence near La Grange in reference to criminal trespass. One adult male was arrested for criminal trespass and public intoxication. Krenek also took a report of a burglary that occurred in the Ellinger area. The case is currently under investigation.

Deputy Holly Smith assisted Investigator Marc Bennett on a traffic stop in La Grange. The driver/suspect took his life immediately upon contact with Smith using a handgun. Smith responded to a residence near Flatonia in reference to a disturbance. After further investigation, one male subject was arrested for public intoxication. Smith also responded to a disturbance involving child custody. It was later determined to be a civil matter and a resolution was reached between both parties.

Deputy Jared Michalec stopped a vehicle on SH 71 near FM 955. The driver of the vehicle was found to be in a large amount of THC products weighing a total of 10,143 grams. The drive was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Michalec also stopped a vehicle on FM 2145 near US 77. Michalec located methamphetamine inside of the vehicle and the driver was arrested.

Deputy Seth Nagel responded to an address in the Warda area in reference to a death inquest. The death was ruled to be of natural causes due to terminal illness. Nagel responded to another death inquest in the La Grange area. The death was also due to terminal illness.

Deputy Orlando Buitron along with Sgt. Ryan Meagher observed a vehicle parked in the spot designated for handicapped drivers in the Pilot parking lot in Schulenburg. The vehicle did not display a handicapped placard as required. The driver and passenger were later found to be in possession of marijuana and a firearm. Both subjects provided Deputies with false names. Deputies were able to correctly identify both occupants who had felony warrants out of Houston. Both subjects were arrested. Buitron also stopped a vehicle on SH 71 westbound. The driver was found to be in possession of marijuana and THC edible products. The driver was arrested.

Deputy Lee Phillips met with an individual at the Sheriff’s Office in reference to forgery. A report was taken. Phillips was dispatched to a structure fire on SH 71 near Kitchen Ln. A grass fire caught approximately 20 hay bales and an abandoned barn on fire. Phillips was dispatched to an address in reference to a suicidal subject. The subject was assessed by Bluebonnet Trails.

Deputy Dustin Kieschnick stopped a vehicle on SH 71 near Ellinger. The vehicle fled and led deputies on a pursuit. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed on SH 71 near Loop 220. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital and is facing felony charges. Kieschnick also stopped a vehicle on US 77. The driver was found to have active warrants out of Cameron County. Inside a suitcase in the trunk, Kieschnick located cocaine. The driver was arrested.

Jail Administrator Ed Sawyer reports that Fayette County Correction Officers booked in 82 individuals for the month of December and transported 2 individuals to the Texas Department of Corrections Facilities to begin serving time for crimes committed in Fayette County.
