Shakespeare Returns To The Country
After a two-year recess for COVID, University of Texas Shakespeareans have set up camp in Fayette County and are well underway.
Session one explores one of Shakespeare’s brightest comedies, “As You Like It.” Welcoming the challenges of Shakespeare’s words and characterizations, the students rise early to begin their day and retire late, following a schedule of creative activities that forge an ensemble approach to the play. Their experience builds a community of lasting friendships, transforms their lives, and develops a strong sense of identity. The secret? Dedication, risk-taking, exploration, the spirit of play, and Gatorade. And, yes, the words.
Camp Shakespeare is a junior version of the University of Texas Shakespeare at Winedale program, offering two twoweek sessions per summer for 11-16 year olds. It is directed by Robin Grace Soto, of Austin. Professor Emeritus Jim (Doc) Ayres, who founded both programs, continues to bring his 52 years of Shakespeare as Director of Mission.
“We have two very lively groups coming this summer,” said Soto, “and two very demanding plays in ‘As You Like It’ and ‘Macbeth.’”
Once again, each play will have three public performances.
