Senior Connections is a Hub of Activity and Friendship where we strive to improve the quality of life for seniors in our community in Schulenburg, Weimar, and Flatonia.

As summer heats up, Senior Connections invites all active seniors to come into the cool air, join us for a week filled with fun, friendship, and delicious home-cooked meals at our gathering places in Schulenburg at 1111 Bowman Ave., in Weimar at The First United Methodist Church, 301 West Saint Charles, and in Flatonia at 403 E. North Main St., located at the Flatonia Methodist Church. Our doors are open from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. on program days, and membership is free.

August 4: Schulenburg We kick off the month on August 4 in Schulenburg with a lively morning filled with games like dominoes, Sequence, and puzzle building. There is always coffee on, and wonderful volunteers to serve it. As the clock strikes 11:20 a.m. our members prepare to indulge in a hearty homecooked meal featuring hamburger mac and cheese, fresh vegetables, cornbread, and a delightful dessert made by one of our talented members. We’re in for a special treat today as Joanne from the Villas at Schulenburg Regency brings in some delicious pies.

Additionally, we will enjoy Senior Spotlight, where we will learn more about our valued member and volunteer, Kathy Carpenter. She plays a vital role in creating our calendars and newsletters. Her computer skills are an invaluable asset to our community, and we’re grateful for all she does. Elizabeth Fox from Freyburg Hall will call our bingo game at 12:30 p.m. ensuring an exciting afternoon filled with prizes and laughter.

August 5: Weimar

Tuesday, we shift our focus to Weimar, where our menu features meatloaf, buttered potatoes, and our special house salad topped with fruit and our secret sauce, complemented by garlic bread and membermade desserts. Today’s Lunch and Learn program welcomes Teresa Smith from the Front Yard Garden Center, who will share tips on fall garden preparation, a topic that may seem far off in the summer heat, and ways to keep our gardens going through the summer.

Following the educational session, Anne Frye with 1st Texas Home Health will join us to call our bingo game, traveling in from Katy, Texas. Her presence is always a delight. This organization has an office right here in Weimar and is known for its compassionate care for its patients.

August 6: Schulenburg Returning to Schulenburg on August 6, we’re excited to serve chicken fried steak with gravy and mashed potatoes paired with green beans prepared by Oakridge Smokehouse. Desserts from our members will once again showcase their culinary talents. Bubba O from Fayette Savings Bank will make our bingo game even more exciting by combining various games into one thrilling round while providing fantastic bingo prizes.

August 8: Artful Friday in Schulenburg To wrap up the week on August 8, we’ll continue our Artful Friday at Arts for Rural Texas, located at 1206 S. Lyons Ave. in Schulenburg. We are grateful for our partnership with Arts, which allows us to offer quality art classes to seniors aged 55 and up. You don’t need to be a member of Senior Connections to participate, but registration for the courses that month is required. Susan Grooms will lead acrylic painting classes, while I, Stephanie Shroyer, will guide a mosaics workshop. A light lunch will be served afterward, allowing everyone to connect further.

As you can see, it is a week packed with fun, food, and friendship. We invite you to join us at any or all our locations. Next week, we will be returning to Flatonia on Tuesday. Be a part of our vibrant community where connections flourish. Our mission is simple: to enhance the quality of life for our elders.
