Senior Connections Prepares for Memorial Day Celebrations
As Memorial Day approaches, Senior Connections, a vibrant senior activity center located in Schulenburg, is gearing up for a week filled with camaraderie, creativity, and celebration. With satellite locations in Weimar and Flatonia, Senior Connections aims to foster community among seniors in Southern Fayette County and Colorado County. Next week, we honor those who served in the armed services, welcome new members, and offer many engaging activities.
The week starts in Flatonia on Tuesday, May 27 where the doors open at 9 a.m. at Flatonia Methodist Church, in Newman Hall. We are especially excited to see how many new members will join us after our recent ice cream social and membership drive. New members are welcome to join any day at any location, allowing them to partake in programs across all three sites.
We will begin chair exercises at 9:45 a.m. perfect for warming up and energizing everyone. Note that this will not interrupt those engaged in dominoes or puzzles.
As lunchtime approaches, we will serve a delicious homemade shepherd’s pie, garlic bread, and a fresh salad at 11:20 a.m. After lunch, we will host a Lunch and Learn program featuring Raphael’s Refuge, a hidden gem just a few miles out of town that many in the community may not know about. Heather Nicole Dove from PAM in Luling will lead a fun-filled bingo game at 12:30 p.m. following this enlightening session. With a day packed with activities, we encourage everyone to come rested and ready for a fantastic time.
On Wednesday, May 28 we return to our home base, Schulenburg, where our doors will again open at 9 a.m. (though some dedicated members often arrive as early as 8:30 a.m.) Start your morning by playing some dominoes or engaging in a game of Sequence, which has become a favorite among our members. We have an enlarged “Sequence” game board to make it easier to read and play.
By 11:15 a.m. we’ll wrap up our games to prepare for a scrumptious meal from Connie Koopmann Catering. On the menu is chicken spaghetti and our fresh salad, lovingly prepared by our amazing volunteers. We will also have a delightful dessert brought by our wonderful members. Deanie Crim from the Schulenburg Regency Family Fitness Center will attend to call bingo, Friday, May 30 – Artful Fridays at Arts For Rural Texas Schulenburg Campus We finish our week on Friday with our Artful Fridays program from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at 1206 Lyons Ave. This is our last session of Jaime Janda’s class. She will return in July to continue guiding seniors in creating personalized art journals encompassing journaling, drawing, painting, scrapbooking, collaging, and more. It’s an excellent opportunity to express yourself and creatively document your life and interests.
Simultaneously, we have an open studio in the other classroom with Stephanie Shroyer. This space invites you to bring your projects to work on or utilize the variety of supplies available in our closet. We will also conclude exploring gelli printing—an exciting and unique technique perfect for those looking to try something new. A light lunch will follow the art sessions.
Arts for Rural Texas holds summer camps where our classes occur during June and July, so we will move our art program to our Senior Connections Schulenburg campus at 1111 Bohlmann Ave. In June, Claire Lewis returns as our Art instructor. She will offer a dive into the art of watercolor painting.
All our programs are free of charge, and while we do welcome voluntary donations, they are not required. We invite everyone to come, enjoy the delicious food, and partake in our planned fun activities.
As we look forward to this short but bustling week at Senior Connections, we hope to see all our old and new members at one or more of our locations.
