Senior Connections A Hub For Active Seniors

  • A contingent of Senior Connections members traveled to Gonzales recently to tour Gonzales’s important role in Texas history, visiting many sites where the actions took place. We had two knowledgeable guides sharing the story. The tour ended at the History Museum, where we gathered to view one of the cannons and many fascinating displays from the day.

Nestled in the heart of Schulenburg, Senior Connections has quickly become a beloved gathering place for active seniors in Fayette and Colorado Counties. With satellite locations in Weimar and Flatonia, this free activity center provides a warm and inviting atmosphere where seniors aged 55 and up can come together, enjoy delicious home-cooked meals, and engage in stimulating activities.

Senior Connections opens its doors promptly at 9 a.m., welcoming members any time throughout the day. With various games, including Dominoes, Sequence, and tarok cards, there is plenty to keep your brain stimulated throughout the morning. These games are entertaining and designed to keep the mind sharp and agile, making them a highlight of the morning routine for many attendees. Members can arrive anytime throughout the day, but it is best to arrive by 11 a.m. if you are coming for the meal. Ensuring you get a good seat, this enables the volunteers to know how many people to provide food for.

Schedule Highlights

Members in Schulenburg will kick off the month on Monday, June 2 with a morning of games followed by a scrumptious lunch featuring brisket and sausage from Oak Ridge Smokehouse, complemented by potato salad and beans prepared by dedicated volunteers. Members are encouraged to bring homemade or store-bought desserts to share a delightful way to contribute to the community.

After lunch, the Senior Spotlight program will feature guest speaker Lillian Vanicek, who will share her inspiring journey and experiences and how she became connected with Senior Connections. Following her talk, Elizabeth Fox from Freyburg Hall will lead an exhilarating game of bingo, which has become a favorite pastime among members. This game also stimulates the brain and hand-eye coordination.

Meet at the First United Methodist Church on College Street on Tuesday, June 3, which will host another fun-filled day. The menu will include Amanda’s chicken pot pie, the volunteers’ famous salad with our house secret sauce, and garlic bread and don’t forget to sign up for dessert. Anne Frye, who travels from Katy, represents First Texas Home Health Care. When she comes to call bingo, she always brings a smile, making the game even more enjoyable.

Come out of the heat for coffee, conversation, games, or puzzles in Schulenburg, on Wednesday, June 4. Members can look forward to a hearty meal of lasagna, garlic bread, and summer salad. Who is bringing dessert? Another exciting bingo session follows the meal. The anticipation of which fun caller from Fayette Savings Bank will show up adds an extra layer of excitement to the day.

Artful Fridays will commence on June 6, introducing a different art instructor for the month. A talented artist, Claire Lewis, returns and will lead watercolor painting classes from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Senior Connections Center. Claire describes her monthlong course: Title Watercolors: Fantasy and Flowers. You will learn to lose your fear of watercolors by understanding the difference between watercolor surfaces like cold and hot press. The differences in paint brushes are flat, round, filbert, and sizes. How do you transfer a flower, animal, picture, or person to watercolor paper? How to make washes Ombre’ wash, wet in wet wash, dry wash. How to layer and mix watercolor washes. When to dry brush.

Call Program Director Stephanie at (979) 702-1246 if you’re interested or have questions about the free class. Please note, we will meet at the Senior Connections Activity Center for June and July courses. Participants can engage in other art activities like their Art Journal or bring a project they are working on, making it a perfect opportunity for everyone, regardless of their artistic background. After class, we will enjoy a nice meal together, allowing participants to get to know each other and catch up with friends.
