Senior Connections Continues to Thrive
The expansions of Senior Connections satellite campuses into neighboring communities is going very well. Senior Connections is carrying out its goals of bringing mealbased programs to people that cannot safely get to the Schulenburg campus.
On Monday, Aug. 26 in Schulenburg, seniors will enjoy a summer delight of sloppy joes, dill pickle pasta salad and chips all from the Senior Connections volunteers, and a dessert brought by one of our members. The Lunch and Learn speaker will be Braden Kahanek with Hometown Wellness. He will talk about Nitric Oxide. What it is, its role in the body, symptoms of low Nitric Oxide, testing for levels, how to increase it in our bodies (through diet and supplements), and why it’s important to increase levels.
On Tuesday, Aug. 27, you will find us in Flatonia for another fun filled day. We will enjoy the morning of coffee, conversation, and games if you like, drop in any time. The meal served at 11:30 a.m. will be prepared by Schobels’s restaurant in Columbus. The chicken casserole will be served with garlic bread, a fresh salad and dessert.
The Lunch and Learn speaker has changed from what is on the printed calendar. The Medicare 101 presentation has been moved to a later date in the year. This way, the presenter can share what changes anyone on Medicare can expect in the upcoming year. Currently that information is not allowed to be shared. Judy Pate with the E.A. Arnim Archives & Museum in Flatonia will be sharing information about their historic organization. Jennifer Wilson with Paradigm at the Oak nursing home in Schulenburg will be our bingo caller for the day.
Back in Schulenburg on Wednesday, Aug. 28 we will enjoy a lunch prepared by Amanda Kridel and the Senior Connections team. Beef stroganoff with a side dish of vegetables and fresh salad will be served. Our bingo game will be called by Deannie Crim of Schulenberg Family Fitness and Rehabilitation Center.
Artful Fridays continue at the center in Schulenburg Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. with Claire Lewis and slow stitching art techniques, or costume jewelry crafts with me, Stephanie Shroyer. Please note that this concludes classes at the Senior Connections location on Bohlmann Avenue. Starting Sept. 6, we will resume classes at Arts For Rural Texas on Lyons Street in Schulenburg. These classes are open to anyone 55 and up.
The September excursion will be a trip to Austin to see the Monet interactive art show. Space is Limited to 13 mobile members. Members will be responsible for half of the entry ticket to be paid at the time you sign up of $17. Senior Connections will cover the transportation through Schuber and the other half of your ticket.
Craig Pierson, our Helping Hero, has added a new couple to his team of April Pierson, Carl Penland, Jimmy Haggeman, and John and Dana Havel. In the fall, Gus Edward’s will be joining the team. They have offered to help out members with things like tree trimming, lawn mowing, cleaning out gutters, and other helpful things like changing light bulbs and other tasks many of us should not do on our own.
They have helped in flowerbeds, spread mulch and many other things. Carl even brought his father-in-law Mac Schramek to help on an electrical project. Please remember that these are volunteers donating their time. However, they are not professionals fully equipped to do full lawn care service.
