Second Chance Stories

Dawn Sedlar and her daughter, Camryn, had an “80s Nite” party to attend and they needed outfits. So they came to Second Chance Emporium in La Grange. Of course. The non-profit is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. every Friday and Saturday and is filled with items from most every decade. Photo by Bill Bishop

Dawn Sedlar and her daughter, Camryn, had a party to go to one Friday evening at the Zapp Hall in Warrenton. The theme was “’80s Nite.”

What to wear?

No problem. The mother and daughter team from La Grange headed to Second Chance Emporium to find the “latest” in 1980s fashion.

They scored, with leg warmers (thank you Jane Fonda) and all kinds of glitter. Dawn found a rhinestone-studded pair of boots. Camryn picked up a spangly black dress. And they filled a small bag with jewelry.

They were ready to disco.

Second Chance is the nonprofit resale shop in La Grange. It is operated by area churches. People donate furniture, CDs and even leg warmers to fill the store. Then shoppers find what they need, from a couch for the living room to a spangly party dress.

Proceeds from the shop (open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) go back to the community in grants to area non-profit groups. Second Chance makes regular monthly grants to area food pantries, Tejas Health Care, Combined Community Action, Bluebonnet Trails Community Services, and the Fayette County Pre scription Drug Program.

Second Chance also makes special grants. In March, the shop’s board made the following donations:

• Gardenia Janssen Animal Shelter received $8,000 to reconfigure existing kennels to create a more flexible space for cats and an isolation area for sick animals.

• St. Mark’s Medical Center received $31,543.28 to purchase a Stryker TPX Small Bone Power Set for surgical services.

• The Texas Ramp Project received $6,000 to buy lumber and hardware. The Ramp Project builds ramps for low-income families and older adults.

• Students at five area high schools will receive scholarships totaling $15,500. The high schools are in Fayetteville, Flatonia, La Grange, Round Top/ Carmine and Schulenburg.
