Schulenburg Student has Medical Emergency On Way Back from the Playoff Football Game

Schulenburg ISD reports that a student is safe after experiencing a medical emergency on a school bus Friday night, Nov. 22.

The bus was on its way home from a football playoff game in Hutto when the episode occurred, according to a letter sent to parents. Schulenburg had just lost to Marlin in the second round of the playoffs, ending their season.

“Last night, one of our high school students experienced a medical emergency while on the bus traveling home from the playoff football game,” said Schulenburg Superintendent Julie Motomura in the letter. “We are so grateful for the students who let the coaches know what was going on with their teammate, and we are so thankful for our coaching staff who immediately took action. First responders were called, and the student was transported to the hospital.”

Motomura said the school could not disclose details about the student’s health or the circumstances that led up to the incident, citing Family Educational Rights and PrivacyAct (FERPA).

“As a school district, the safety of our students is always our top priority,” Motomura went on to say in the letter. “This includes physical safety, and emotional safety and security. This situation is extremely concerning to all of us at SISD, and please know, we are determined to get to the bottom of it and learn from it. I assure you we will be reviewing our policies and procedures to ensure we are doing everything possible to prevent situations like this in the future. We will also partner with others to address the ongoing challenges related to some of the choices our students are making and will do this by focusing on education, prevention, and enforcement measures.”

The Record asked Motomura to clarify what exactly happened without identifying any students. She declined, again citing the FERPA law.

“We are conducting an investigation,” she said. “We have no further information we can share at this time.”
