Schulenburg History Honored at Ceremony

The owners of the Paul Breymann Building in downtown Schulenburg held a ceremony to unveil a historical marker from the Texas Historical Commission on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Mark Elvig, the husband of building owner Katrina Packard Elvig, opened the ceremony with a talk about the history of the building. Gus and Karen Breymann, descendants of the building’s original owner, unveiled the Texas Historical Marker. Gus Breymann, Judge Dan Mueller and Mayor Connie Koopman all gave remarks. Father William Miller of St. Cecilia’s Church in Round Top delivered a prayer and blessing.

Diane Mikesky and Nina Howard of the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce assisted Katrina Elvig’s grandchildren, Jaxson and Josie Packard, in cutting the ribbon.

Direct descendants of the Paul Breymann family traveled from Michigan, New Mexico and San Francisco for the unveiling. Also in attendance was Rudy Engstrom of RWE, the contractor who restored the building, along with his wife, Stephanie.

George Koudelka, who grew up in Schulenburg, shared a story about buying a book about Daniel Boone in 1955 at the Breymann Pharmacy. He still has the book.

After the ceremony, the Elvigs held a reception inside Sengelmann Hall down the street.
