Round Top Plein Air Festival to Debut New Texas Artist Residency Partnership
Studio Texas and Pioneer Arts Properties have announced a new partnership that will expand artist residencies across rural Texas, with the collaboration set to debut publicly at the Rolling Hills of Round Top Plein Air Festival on April 24-25. The festival will award two week long artist retreats—one in Fort Davis and one at the historic Hondo Gristmill—marking the first residencies offered under the agreement and signaling a new chapter in donor driven cultural development.
A Partnership Rooted in Philanthropic Leadership The agreement positions Studio Texas as the exclusive manager of all Pioneer Arts Properties residencies, creating a unified system designed to support artists, strengthen rural communities, and expand the cultural footprint of Texas. The partnership reflects a shared belief that meaningful artistic growth requires time, space, and the kind of support that visionary donors make possible.
For patrons and arts supporters, the initiative represents a long term investment in the future of Texas creativity. By helping to establish sustainable residency programs, donors play a defining role in shaping the state’s cultural landscape and ensuring that artists have the resources they need to thrive. The partnership is structured to endure, offering supporters the assurance that their contributions build lasting creative infrastructure.
Residency Awards Introduced at the Festival
The Rolling Hills of Round Top Plein Air Festival will serve as the launchpad for the partnership. More than 40 artists will gather to paint the landscapes of Fayette County, culminating in a juried awards ceremony where two artists will be selected for the inaugural residencies:
• Fort Davis Artist Escape Residence — a high desert retreat offering expansive views and uninterrupted creative focus.
• South Texas Gristmill Retreat in Hondo — a restored historic property surrounded by native grasses and oak trees, ideal for artists seeking inspiration in rural quiet.
These residencies provide private accommodations, uninterrupted studio time, and the freedom to create new work—opportunities made possible through the generosity of donors who believe in supporting artists directly and meaningfully.
Festival Timeline
The two day festival blends artistic excellence with donor engagement:
• Friday, April 24: The Art Experience, an intimate 20 guest studio and collection tour featuring visits to Judy Elias Hill’s and Stephen Henry’s studios, with chauffeured transportation, prosecco, and light refreshments.
• Saturday, April 25: Quick Draw Competition and VIP Brunch at Round Top Realty, followed by the Blue Ribbon Patron’s Hour and the VIP Awards Reception at The Compound, where the residency winners will be announced.
The festival continues to grow as a signature cultural event, drawing collectors, patrons, and arts supporters from across the state.
Shared Stewardship Ensures Long Term Impact The partnership outlines a structure designed for sustainability and donor confidence:
• Studio Texas will manage all residency programming, bookings, contracts, calendars, and artist communications, while documenting artist experiences and reporting annually on impact.
• Pioneer Arts Properties will maintain the properties, cover utilities and insurance, and support long term infrastructure needs. This shared stewardship ensures that donor contributions translate directly into meaningful artist support and long term cultural growth.
Community Voices Reflect Strong Support
Artists and collectors who have engaged with Studio Texas programs describe the partnership as a natural extension of the organization’s mission.
“Studio Texas gave me the opportunity to connect with collectors in a way I’ve never experienced before. The December show was one of the most meaningful events of my career, and the support I felt from the community was overwhelming.” - Carolyn Lindsey, Artist “What Studio Texas is building is extraordinary. The level of access, the quality of the artists, and the sense of community are unlike anything else in Texas. This partnership will elevate the entire region.” - Studio Texas Collector
