Round Top, Fayetteville See Biggest Growth in Sales Tax
September pushed La Grange past the $2 million mark for sales tax revenue this year and Schulenburg past $1 million.
For both that means a little more than a 2% increase from this time last year.
Two Fayette County towns are up by double digits, however. Both are magnets for antique-hunters.
Round Top has taken in $405,521 so far this year, up 17.1% and pushing its total above Flatonia’s, which is usually in third place for the county. Flatonia is up a respectable 8.8%, but not enough to keep its third place standing.
Fayetteville, where the antiques trade also flourishes, is up even more, with a 19.1% increase over last year at this time. Carmine is up 1.8%. Only Ellinger is in negative territory, with a 2.2% decline in city sales tax revenue as of September.
All in all, Fayette County’s retail sales gains are about average for the region. Nine counties in the area, including Fayette, levy the optional retail sales tax. Fayette County has received just over $2.5 million from it so far, a gain of 5.9% over last year. Four of the other counties have bigger increases; four have smaller increases.
Three of them, in fact, are actually down for the year – Colorado, Lee and Burleson.
The big gainer in the area is Austin County. Not only is the county up 38.8% from a year ago, but both its larger towns also have double-digit gains. Sealy has taken in just under $3 million so far, up 13.8% from last year, and Bellville, at just under $1 million, is up 13.6%. These are the largest increases among the 18 towns near Fayette County that are tracked by the Record.

For La Grange, this is the fifth straight year that sales tax revenue through September has increased from the prior year. Not since 2020, during the Covid shut-downs, has there been a decrease.
The Bastrop area is by far the region’s largest trade center. Areas outside the Bastrop city limits appear to be growing faster than those inside the city, however. As a whole, Bastrop County is up 10.5% from this time last year. The town of Bastrop is up only 2.3%, just under La Grange’s 2.4%. One high-profile development in the county but outside of the city is the SpaceX complex, located on FM 1209. Although the official headquarters of SpaceX is at the newly incorporated Starbase, Texas, its facilities in Bastrop County are expanding. When Gov. Greg Abbott earlier this year announced a $17.3 million grant to SpaceX “for expansion of their semiconductor research and development and advanced packaging facility in Bastrop.”
Work is supposed to begin this month on an 80,000-square-foot expansion of the SpaceX offices on FM 1209. In addition, the Boring Company, also owned by Elon Musk, has facilities in the same complex.
