Revolutionary Heroes Buried Above La Grange Remembered

The Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites hosted the annual Monument Hill Remembrance Day Ceremony on Texas Heroes Day, Saturday, Sept. 19.

Betty Hill, president of the Monument Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the Texas Revolution, and Rodney Koenig, president of the Monument Hill Chapter of the Sons of the Texas Revolution, delivered welcoming remarks. Koenig spoke about the upcoming renovations to the Historic Sites, including a new visitors center and restrooms.

Texas historian and author Dr. Frank de la Teja gave the keynote address. He spoke about the political origins of the Texas Revolution, and the inspiration it drew from the American Revolution of 1776. Later in the day, Dr. de la Tejas delivered a speech titled “Erasmo Seguin: A Neglected Texas Founding Father.

Texas Army reenactors dressed in period clothing laid wreaths on the tomb as the names were read of the men from the Dawson Massacre and Mier Expedition. They then fired a three-volley salute in honor of the men entombed on the Bluff.

The Colorado Valley Detachment of the Marine Corps League presented the colors at the beginning of the ceremony and performed Taps at the conclusion.
