The Record Says ‘Please Let It Rain’ – And It Did
“Newspaper seeding” might one day exceed cloud seeding based on The Fayette County Record’s recent success in rainmaking. Five times in recent years, The Record carried major news stories about an impending drought in Fayette County. In four of those five instances, a general rain fell while the papers were in the mail to subscribers. Needless to say, the follow-up stories were the kind of retractions that The Record didn’t mind running. ‘Worth a million’ to Fayette County farmers and ranchers, according to County Extension Agent Clint Bippert, between one and four inches of rain were gauged. He said the entire county’s corn crop and over 90% of the milo had been planted before the rain.
The Fayette County Jail had nine inhabitants over the three-day weekend. Arrests were for driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana and other offenses, according to the sheriff’s office.
La Grange voters elected a new city councilor and Schulenburg citizens returned their long-time mayor to office in elections held on Saturday. Alois J. Petrusek, a retired high school teacher and driver education instructor, easily won his bid for La Grange Ward 2 alderman, replacing Milton J. Pechal, who retired after serving 15 years on council. In Schulenburg, Mayor Hirsh N. Schwartz handily won his reelection bid.
La Grange Civil Defense was allocated $1,823 for a six-month period of participation in the Texas Division of Disaster Emergency Service Department of Public Safety. The money represented the federal government’s share of half of the estimated costs of $3,146 for personnel, $300 for travel and $200 for incidental expenses.
For the second time in recent weeks, the Fayetteville Public School building was hit by burglars sometime during the weekend. Sheriff’s officer said two tape recorders, a radio, some keys and an undetermined amount of money were taken in the latest break-in. The investigation determined a window in the superintendent’s office had been smashed to gain entrance, and a door glass between the school and gym was also broken.
The Natural Resources Committee of the Texas House of Representatives unanimously approved Senate Bill 155, removing the $300 million debt ceiling on the Lower Colorado River Authority and increasing its electric generating limitation to 5,000 megawatts.
Kenny Hatfield of the La Grange Leopard team posted a new meet record of 2:03.9 in the 88-yard run at the Hallettsville varsity relays. La Grange came 6th in the competition with 44 points. Other Leopard placings included: shot – Bert Vasut, 2nd; Thomas Supak, 3rd; and Robert Poole, 5th; 440-relay – Richard Cernosek, Alfredie Scott, Hatfield and Douglas Richter 5th; Mile relay – Hatfield, Scott Johnny Johnson and Poole 3rd.
The Fayette Soil and Water Conservation District announced its 1974 conservation award winners. Robert Lehmann, who operated a 376-acre farm in the Warda community, was named resident conservation farmer of the year. Two-R Farms of Round Top, which consisted of 237 acres owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph H. McCullough and managed by Franklin Schobel, was chosen as nonresident conservation farmers of the year. The award for outstanding district member went to Trickle Creek Ranch, the 142-acre property owned by Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Schwarz and managed by J.C. Golleher.
Mrs. L.J. Sulak was honored on her 90th birthday by her daughter, Mrs. C.J. Cernosek, and her daughter-inlaw, Mrs. John L. Sulak, with an informal party at the honoree’s home on N. Franklin on Sunday afternoon. A special guest was Mrs. F.C. Kallus, the mother of Mrs. John L. Sulak.
Miss Barbara Hrncir, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Hrncir, was chosen as a Heritage Belle for the Washington County Heritage Society tour in Brenham on Sunday. The belles would dress in antebellum costumes with banners depicting their respective cities.
La Grange junior high and high school girls’ track meet included the following seventh-grade placings: discus – Princess Strambler 3rd; Peggy Supak 4th; high jump – Arvecia Wheeler 1st, Sheila Willrich 4th; 220-yard dash – Willrich 2nd; 60-yard dash – Alberta Fenix 4th; 100-yard dash – Wheeler 4th, Willrich 6th; 440-yard relay – Wheeler, Fenix, Marilyn McKenzie and Willrich, 2nd.
Susan Prause and Karen Fritsche, members of the Beta Alpha chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Blinn College, left Wednesday on Eastern Airlines for a five-day national convention in Philadelphia.
Funeral services were held for Ben W. Wiederaenders, 79, of La Grange and Otto C. Witt, 87, of La Grange.
