Randolph Recreation Center Becomes New Home for Senior Connections
A big group of Senior Connections members converged on the town of Fayetteville recently stopping at Joe’s Place for lunch, a visit to Arts for Rural Texas to see the current exhibit hanging and then on to the Fayetteville Community Center for Second Sunday Polka Day. Members enjoyed the music of the Red Ravens. Carol and Gary Bucek with the Polka Museum in La Grange visited in Schulenburg and got everyone excited about our upcoming visit to their museum in August. Senior Connections members Frida Ellison, Frank Lafferty, and Linda Holman were in the house in Schulenburg to celebrate their birthdays.
Senior Connections is excited to announce that the Randolph Recreation Center in La Grange will be the third satellite location. We have received many comments from La Grange residents asking us to open a satellite there. We are making that happen starting Aug. 5, meeting every Wednesday of the month from 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Due to this addition to our schedule, our monthly calendar will look a little different. But I know that we will all adjust. No longer will there be weekends or Thursdays on the calendar, and in place of Thursday, we have a second Wednesday. And this will reflect the agenda for the La Grange schedule. For more information on this new addition, contact Denise Roberts at (832) 641-8733. She will be running the program there.
Let’s look at the calendar for the final week of July 2731. On Monday, July 27, our doors open in Schulenburg at 1111 Bohlmann Ave. beginning at 9 a.m. Members can come in anytime until 2 p.m. Dominoes, cards, games, puzzle building, and other games are available for anyone wishing to join in. Volunteers will serve up hot coffee with a smile. For lunch, we will have a delicious treat of beef tips from Connie Koopmann Catering. Volunteers will prepare rice and our famous house salad to accompany the beef tips. And there will be garlic bread to fill the air with a mouthwatering aroma. Members will bring desserts. We have a sign-up sheet in our binder for members to add their name to provide a dessert, baked or bought.
We have a treat for our Lunch and Learn program. Beloved Gary Carpenter, husband of our irreplaceable vol-unteer Kathy Carpenter, will be coming to talk to us about the painted churches. He is a tour guide for the Schulenburg Chamber and is filled with information about the beautiful church’s history. Following this presentation, Nichole Owers with Amedisys Hospice will be in the house to call our bingo game.
On July 28, join us at Flatonia Methodist Church, 403 E. North Main St. Schedule is the same as Schulenburg‘s schedule. Our lunch will be beef biscuit casserole made by Amanda Kridel, served with steamed vegetables, our house salad, and desserts by our member Taylor Laney. Taylor, owner of Darlins Diner, will be in the house for our Lunch and Learn program. Did you know that she’s also a musician? She’s one talented lady. Flatonia Healthcare will send somebody over to call the bingo game for the day.
July 29 is a big day for us. It is our indoor summer picnic and ice cream social at the KC Hall in Schulenburg. Same schedule, different place. We have to make room for all of our members who have signed up for this wonderful gathering. We will have all your favorite games for you to play in the morning, and we will begin serving lunch by 11:15 a.m. to accommodate the crowd. What’s on the menu? Of course, you need hamburgers for a picnic. And we will have chips, potato salad, pea salad, fruit, and ice cream floats. Vic Rodrigues will provide musical entertainment after our meal until 2 p.m.
Artful Friday continues on July 31 at Arts for Rural Texas in Schulenburg at 1206 S. Lyons Ave. We returned to the Arts classroom last Friday. We had to make way for the Schulenburg Festival that takes place in Wolters Park. So we will resume meeting at Arts for the rest of the year. Today is the last day to finish up projects in the Needle felting class led by Bonny Karstedt or the watercolor class led by Claire Lewis.
August classes include acrylic painting by Susan Grooms, who we are so excited to have back. The other class will be a member’s favorite, junk jewelry art by me, Stephanie Shroyer.
Senior Connections begin receiving artwork from our students and members for our upcoming art show, Ageless Artistry, on Fridays throughout August. Artwork by any member at any of our locations can be dropped off at 1206 S. LyonsAve. on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call the center to make other arrangements. Artists can donate one or more of their pieces to be sold or auctioned for a fundraiser for our capital campaign to refurbish our new/old building in Schulenburg.
The Ageless Artistry art show will be on display from Sept. 12 through the end of November. We will host a reception on the Sept. 12 from 3-5 p.m.
