Protect Yourself During National Consumer Protection Week

This week, March 2-8, is National Consumer Protection Week, and Fayette Elec-tric Cooperative is proud to join Utilities United Against Scams in raising awareness about utility impostor scams. Scammers are constantly finding new ways to trick customers, but by knowing the signs, you can protect yourself and your community.

Be Aware of Common Scam Tactics:

• Scammers create fake utility payment websites to trick customers into searching for their provider online. Always use the website listed on your bill.

• They pose as utility representatives and demand immediate payment—sometimes even showing up at your door. If someone threatens immediate disconnection, close the door and call your utility.

• Fraudsters send suspicious texts or emails claiming your bill is overdue. Contact your utility directly to verify.

• Some scammers even target real estate agents, demanding payment to prevent a shutoff during an open house. Remember, utilities will reach out multiple times before disconnection and offer assistance if your bill is overdue.

How to Stay Safe:

• Slow Down – Scammers rely on urgency to pressure you. Take a moment to verify.

• Verify – Only use official contact information from your bill or utility’s website.

• Stop the Scam – Report any suspicious activity to your utility company.

Important Reminder: Utilities will never ask for payments via third-party apps, prepaid cards, or cryptocurrency. They will also never ask for your financial details after your account is set up.
