A prominent couple from San Antonio died in a crash on Interstate 10 between Schulenburg and Flatonia last Friday, June 12.

The wreck happened around 2:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes near the 667 mile marker. According to Sgt. Darryl Tidwell of the Texas Department of Public Safety, a truck-tractor pulling a double trailer had a tire blowout. The rig pulled off the highway and was legally parked on the shoulder. Tidwell said an SUV veered off the roadway and struck the back of the double trailer. Both the driver and passenger died in the crash, he said. Tidwell said investigators could not determine why the SUV veered off the road.

The couple were identified as Carlos and Jenn Mugica of Castle Hills, an enclave of San Antonio. According to news reports out of San Antonio, the Mugicas were well-known in the Alamo City for their involvement with the San Antonio Fiesta celebration. The couple were also involved with the Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation, which awards scholarships to San Antonio-area youth. According to news reports, Carlos Mugica worked as a realtor in San Antonio, and Jenn Mugica was an assistant principal at Longfellow Middle School.

“Their kindness, generosity, and commitment to our community left a lasting impact on all who knew them, said Castle Hills Mayor JR Trevino in a post on Facebook. “We are grateful for their many contributions to Castle Hills and for the countless ways they enriched our lives simply by being part of it. They will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.”

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County EMS and Flatonia Fire and Rescue all assisted at the scene of the wreck.
