Elizabeth Dettling Moreno is a retired Language Arts teacher who became a published author after she started her next phase of life. Moreno lived in Wharton for most of her life, but moved to Warda after she married Randy Tolman in November of 2021. She is the mother of four sons and one daughter, sixteen grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. She and her husband live at Camp Lost Pines in Warda.

Her information is available on the face book page for her books - “Sancho, the Silly Billy Goat and Friends.” She can be contacted by email at praise77488@sbcglobal.net or call (979) 533-0216.

Summary of Books by Elizabeth Dettling Moreno (available for sale at the Record newspaper office)

• “Tales from the Chicken Yard and Other Fowl Stories” is based on fact and fiction and provides lots of laughs. The true part consists of stories about the crazy antics of my chickens. The fiction part is that our pet dog is telling the stories to her grand puppies to keep them entertained. Some of the star characters are That Bad Rooster; Princess, the Dignified Hen; The Hen that Crowed; and The Old Girls. It’s a chapter book, written in a style similar to “Hank, the Cowdog.” A glossary has been provided for some of the harder vocabulary words and an assortment of idioms used throughout the stories. Illustrations were provided by East Bernard native Jeanette Smaistrla Crum, who just recently discovered her artistic talents.

• The coloring book for “Tales from the Chicken Yard” was created for young listeners who aren’t quite ready to read or who need a little extra entertainment. It uses pictures directly from the book, just enlarged to make it easier for little hands to color.

• “Sancho, the Silly Billy Goat,” is based on a true story that happened in Beasley in the 1940’s. This little goat caused all kinds of trouble for the family that owned him to the point that he had to be sent away. The book is written as a narrative poem and includes 20 Spanish words with a glossary for their pronunciations and meanings. Artwork was provided by 14 year old student Mykala Sutton from Louisiana.

• “The Return of Sancho, the Not-So Silly Billy Goat,” was written in response to all the readers who insisted that San-cho be brought back. In this totally made-up book, Sancho has been rehabilitated and now lives a very fulfilling life. Like the first Sancho, this book is written in verse and includes another 20 Spanish words with a glossary. The same artist, Mykala Sutton, who was now 16, provided the new colorful illustrations.

• “My Dream of Freedom, From Holocaust to my Beloved America,”

Autobiography by survivor Helen Colin, (Liz Moreno helped Mrs. Colin write her story)

• “Psalms of Motherhood and Other Reflections on Life” – a collection of prayer poems, poetry, essays, and a combination of writings that chronicle my life with my four children during and after my first marriage went awry and what God did for us in the next phase of our lives.
