Pitbull Pandemonium

Special to the Record

I don’t even remember why I opened my front door that night, but I looked out and saw two pitbulls running up the sidewalk towards me and a police officer in my driveway with a gun pointed at them. I immediately retreated inside and soon thereafter heard gunshots. After a while, the officer knocked on my door to apologize and said that there were two pitbulls he had to put down. The next morning, I went outside and there was blood on my driveway which was horrifying and so sad to me. I don’t remember those pitbulls looking vicious when they were galloping up the sidewalk towards me so that made it especially upsetting, although there had been others previously roaming the neighborhood that were not terribly friendly and scaring neighborhood kids. Someone had reported these two loose pitbulls and that’s why the officer showed up.

I had a new neighbor who was building cages in his backyard to breed them. I found this out from the contractor putting up the cages. I was flabbergasted, I thought that’s all we need, more pitbulls in the neighborhood. It’s not like we were out in the country either; this was a standard suburban neighborhood. I reported him to the HOA, the local animal control and the police. His operation came to a screeching halt. But he still had several pitbulls in the backyard that made me nervous because I let my cats play in the backyard and worried about them falling off the fence into his yard. It was the final straw for me considering all the other issues I had in that neighborhood so I decided to sell my house and move.

My experience with pitbulls made me think that they were all generally vicious animals. My son told me that was not the case. They’re like any other dog, they act the way they’re treated. Based on my experience though, I had a hard time agreeing with him but then I remembered one of my best friends had a pitbull and when I used to visit her, he was the sweetest dog with his little heart shaped face. When I remembered this, then I realized my son was correct.

I love all animals and cannot stand people who mistreat them. I have a neighbor who I saw outside with his dog. He kept yelling at the dog to potty. It wouldn’t. So he kicked the dog hard enough that the dog cried out and then yanked it back towards his home. I hollered out “hey!” Either he didn’t hear me or chose to ignore me. I thought next time I see him we’re going to have a conversation. I never saw him again though. Seeing how he treated his dog enraged me; once I calmed down, I broke down in tears. It literally ruined my day.

I had a friend who used to hunt. He was telling me about how one time he shot a rabbit. The mate of that rabbit came running over and started screaming; he said it sounded just like a baby crying. He was so shocked and upset by this that he dropped his rifle and never hunted again.

I would never hunt for sport or intentionally kill an animal for food, even if I was starving to death. One thing we have in common with all living creatures on Earth is the urge to survive. I could never take that away from them.
