Old Fayetteville Gulf Station Becoming ‘Prohibition’

Prohibition is coming to the Fayetteville square.

Amy and Brian Brown aren’t new to Fayetteville. But their new home located next to the cemetery, topped by a chandelier-lit cupola and their new store on the square are surely something to talk about.

“Everyone asks us if we mind living next to a cemetery. The answer is ‘no.’ We think it’s such a peaceful place and there won’t be housing built right next to us. We moved in the week before Christmas. Before this, we had a place on Mechanic St. for three years that we sold to Jim and Beth Rushing.”

The couple have been married for two years. Brian is a retired firefighter from Little Rock. Amy has owned Old World Antieks in La Grange off of Hwy 71 for 13 years. Their new liquor store will soon occupy the old Gulf Station in the square. “Prohibition” will serve as a liquor store replete with antique liquor signs, related collectibles and old-fashioned candy and sodas. “We’re selling liquor but we also wanted a type of store you’re comfortable bringing your kids into. It’s kind of like the Cracker Barrel gift shop concept,” commented Amy.

“When everything shut down for COVID, we were thinking about what would be really needed in our small town. We noticed that as a result of the virus, liquor sales have gone out the roof. And we all have to drive to La Grange for liquor. There are great stores there but it’s a nice addition to the town to have a place right here. Eventually, we’d love to hear from the locals on what they may want us to keep in stock for them,” shared Amy. “We just love Fayetteville and the people here. We’re excited about sharing this new adventure.”

Amy has two children. Her daughter is in college and her son attends FISD. Brian will manage Prohibition, tentatively set to open in the spring.

Park Plans

Initial plans to clean up for the Fayetteville Park Project on Saturday, Feb. 26 are on hold, thanks to generously donated tractor work performed. The progress made was much more than we anticipated. Stay tuned for a progress report in the near future. Thank you to all that volunteered.
